The century 1550–1650 was the Age of Shipwreck for the Portuguese voyager who sailed the sea roads of the East, risking disaster and death for a handful of spices or a touch of glory. Memorials to his bravery and folly exist in the shipwreck narratives of the period, which, in their tragic and intimate detail, reveal the high drama of maritime catastrophe. James Duffy analyzes these narratives and sees in them a significance beyond the dramatic, for in part they tell the story of an empire’s decline and fall.

Against the background of Portugal’s expansion in the East, the author retells and interprets the stories of disaster at sea. In chapters treating the ship, the ship’s complement, the voyage East and the return, the moment of shipwreck, and the experiences of survivors, he follows closely the Portuguese sailors and passengers as they are propelled toward death. Ultimately, the original equation of the Portuguese triumphant over the sea was reversed, and the fate of the ships and the men who sailed in them became the fate of an empire.
